Nazareth House Day Nursery has been an established institution in Lancaster since 1972, and has been thoughtfully refurbished and expanded to meet the latest standards in early childhood care. This new chapter began in 2011, when celebrated Coronation Street scriptwriter and former nursery parent, Peter Whalley, officially opened the updated nursery.
At Nazareth House in Lancaster, our day nursery and care home are close-knit facilities that enrich the lives of all who live, work, and learn here. Though independently run, both embody Nazareth House’s legacy of care and commitment, welcoming children and adults alike into a supportive, inclusive community.
Nursery provision
0-2 years: In the Bluebells Room we care for infants from 3 to 24 months, with a 3:1 child-to-staff ratio and capacity for up to 15 children per session. The room offers a dedicated indoor and outdoor play area with carefully chosen resources to support each stage of development. A quiet sensory space with low lighting and soothing music is available for naps, providing a calm environment for rest. This space can also be used by mothers wishing to breastfeed.
2-3 years: The Poppy Room cares for children aged 2 to 3 years old, with a 4:1 child-to-staff ratio and capacity for 20 children per session. The room features diverse play areas designed to support development, and “free-flow” access to the large soft surface play area which is shared with the Sunflower Room, and partially covered to allow for outdoor play when weather conditions are not permitting.
The children also enjoy a field with a rope bridge, sandpit, musical features, and a garden for growing fruits and vegetables.
3-4 years: Our spacious Sunflower Room serves up to 32 children aged 3 and above, with an 8:1 child-to-staff ratio. Fully equipped to support each child’s interests and development, it includes various play areas as well as quiet zones. Children enjoy free-flow playtime for exploration, along with structured activities to support literacy, phonics, and social development, helping build positive relationships with both peers and staff. The shared outdoor area also allows for interactions between siblings and other children of a similar age.

We celebrate diverse cultures and global festivals to promote an enriched understanding of our multicultural society, and also have a dedicated Equality Named Coordinator (ENCO) who oversees our commitment to equality and inclusion.
Special Educational Needs
We are committed to upholding a positive, collaborative relationship with parents, always consulting them if we observe a child experiencing challenges. Each child’s progress is carefully observed, monitored, and documented, with close coordination among relevant professionals to provide effective support for any additional needs. Parents are also included in all communications to ensure transparency and partnership.
The nursery is wheelchair accessible, featuring an automatic door with push-button entry, wide doorways, and a disabled visitor’s restroom to ensure ease of access for all.
Inclusion and diversity are integral to our policies, staff approach, community links, and engagement with families. Allyson Jackson serves as our dedicated Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO), overseeing our support for children with additional needs.
